Judy Garland and Gene Kelly star in the classic musical directed by Busby Berkeley. Young vaudeville performers Harry Palmer and Jo Hayden (Kelly and Garland) dream of stardom, but the United States enters World War I and Harry receives his draft notice--trapping the two between their obligation to each other's dreams and their duty to their country. While Kelly made a career out of For Me and My Gal and his partnership with Garland and spent the next 50 years just varying his creation from there, this film only gave Martha the opportunity to play a second similarly unremarkable role in another Garland-branded film, Presenting Lily Mars. In this film, Mártha is a Paris Opera diva on a world tour, and her encounter with Kelly forms the main catharsis of the Kelly/Garland relationship. She gets the opportunity to sing a charming aria and in her second scene at least bat away Garland. Anyone who feels I'm doing an injustice to For Me and My Gal should wake up to the closing AMERICA NEEDS YOUR MONEY BUY WAR BONDS AND STAMPS AT THIS THEATER.
