Franciska Gál is a maid somewhere in the country-side during the 1940s. She and Lajos, the jeweller next door, fall in love with each other and spend the week-ends dashing around on Lajoss huge motorcycle, much like in a film. Then comes the war, and Franciskas employer as well as Lajos are carried off because they are Jewish. After the liberation, Franciska travels to Budapest and enrolls in the police-force in order to become someone. One day, Lajos stands in her door. From that time on, Franciska leads a double life. During the weekdays she is a room-commander in the camp, but her week-ends are devoted to her man who makes golden rings and rents out bicycles in secret; he does not progress with the age. One afternoon, instead of Lajos, she only finds a tape, containing the last message of her beloved. She learns that Lajos is on his way to Canada to his daughter. After many years, following Lajoss death, his daughter invites the lonely Franciska to Canada for two weeks. Franciska then recounts her whole life. (official distributor synopsis)
