This visual composition rhythmically matches its soundtrack, the prelude to Fingal’s Cave, which Felix Mendelssohn composed on the basis of the acoustic effects in this sea cave on Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. In their accentuation, however, the images are autonomous; in restrained compositions, they observe large waves and clouds, and the framing emphasizes the massiveness of the sea only to create abstract moments when it focuses on smooth stones or the traces left by the receding water in the sand.
