Sacrifice

In his latest film, Kaige Chen, who directed the first Chinese film ever to receive the Golden Palm in Cannes, depicts a historic drama about revenge. A respectable Chinese Family is slaughtered by their enemy, Tu'an Gu. Only one baby survives and is taken in by doctor Cheng Yink. Tu'an Gu, suspecting that the last descendant of his enemies is alive and in hiding, orders the capture of all newborns, but the last of the Zhao escapes. Will the orphan succeed in avenging the whole dynasty? The film, with its characters similar to those of Shakespearean tragedies, was immensely successful in China. The impressive cast captivates the audience despite the lack of spectacular fighting scenes. (Febiofest)
