Captive

This thrilling drama is inspired by real events from the year 2001, when Islamic separatists attacked a hotel resort and captured several Western tourists. The captives' fight for their own lives takes place in the Philippine jungle, which proves to be just as dangerous as the terrorists' weapons. Fear, increasing numbers of victims and unsuccessful negotiations cause the captives and kidnappers to gradually get closer to each other. The hopeless situation, which drags on for a year, is emphasised by the performance of Isabelle Huppert. The picture, by Philippine director Brillante Mendoza, appeared in the main competition at the Berlinale. (Febiofest)
