English Homo homini lupus. Eli Roth is still looking for a gem that would secure him wider recognition (in the Czechoslovak world he’s unfairly despised due to Hostel). Aftershock won’t be it, but it’s still a nice genre snack that I enjoyed in the same way as Roth’s other attempts at horror. It has likeable and fun characters that make it very bearable, even in the opening act. It’s permeated by a generous dose of detachment and at some point it can be exciting, brutal and funny at the same time (the hand, the cleaning lady in the club). The third thing that I liked is how some of the characters die in an unexpected way – and even in a different order than I would have guessed at the beginning. For a moment, I considered a fourth star, but the unoriginal climax in the catacombs prevented it, in particular, the really weird final fight. But it also adds a small and insignificant plus with its last scene. ()
