Once upon a time there was a little girl who had never known her mother. She learned the art of her father, a famous bullfighter, but was hated by her evil stepmother. One day she ran away with a troupe of dwarves, and became a legend. Set in southern Spain in 1920s, Blancanieves is a tribute to silent films. Blancanieves was also Spain's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for 2012. (Cohen Media Group)

English The third bloody movie about Snow White from 2012. This one takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in Sevilla, Spain, among bullfights, and the name of the heroine is Carmen. The movie is also black and white and silent, and it’s certainly a coincidence that it came out about a year after the Oscar winner, and also silent, The Artist. I don’t know who had the great idea of making this, but it has attracted quite a lot of people who spent a pleasant moment with this Southern European retro Snow White (18 nominations for the Goya Awards). My congratulations, but to celebrate Spanish filmography, I will have to wait for one of those nice atmospheric thrillers or horror movies. ()

English A slightly different take on Snow White and her story, this time focusing on the form and shifting it to Spain a hundred years ago. Silent films don't get that much attention, but they still look good. Just as interesting is the colorful execution. However, the story itself doesn't offer anything additional, so credit goes to the form and to the midgets, who express a lot through silence. ()
