“When you make a film that has a story you ignore wonderful things that you see during filming just because they don't have anything to do with the story.” Richard Leacock has never made this mistake. He didn’t have a story: he just went and filmed. Through the lens of the camera, life is captured – it isn’t delivered as a ready-made film experience. The documentary filmmaker is considered to be the founder of Direct Cinema. He travelled with a hand-held camera and recorded sound on location, becoming a pioneer in this field as well. With Ricky on Leacock Jane Weiner has succeeded in creating a portrait of her mentor: a documentary film about a documentary filmmaker and an appeal for making films. (DOK.fest München)
