The story that forever unites man with a faithful watchdog begins in the time of hunters and gatherers. Man and wolf slowly became friends and the support of wolves in hunting led to more successful hunts and hence richer banquets and more off spring. Society turned the animal; an unpredictable predator and feared attacker thousands of years ago, into a devoted friend, with the close relationship considered to be a natural thing nowadays. We share our lives and beds with dogs. Therefore scientists try to understand them as much as possible. Through cognitive experiments they investigate dogs’ abilities of intuition and unquestionable intelligence. Current research allows us not only to analyse barking, to scientifically explain dogs’ ability to read human emotions and to accelerate the process of domestication, but also to explain the origin of the unusual dependence of man on dog. Swedish scientists suggest that the excretion of a love hormone is behind this strong link; the same hormone responsible for the bond between a mother and her child. A unique mutual relationship has been created by breeding dogs for thousands of years, supported by our innate desire to bring up offspring. (Academia Film Olomouc)
