It is the story of Balassi Bálint, the poet and warrior. The scene is Hungary at the end of the 16th century. The soldiers stationed at the castles of Hungary's border defence-system spend their days with anti-Turkish raids, hunting and womanising. Balassi falls in love with Losonczy Anna, the wife of the Viceroy of Croatia. Although Anna is attracted to him too, she refuses him. Balassi secretly marries his relative, Dobó Krisztina. For this, his brother-in-law starts a law-suit against him. Although Balassi converts to the Catholic faith, his marriage is annulled. (even though they have a child). He again turns to Anna with his love, but in vain. In Poland, he finds shelter in the house of count Wesselényi. In his absence his love-starved wife and Balassi make love, but Balassi would like to return to his native country. Upon his return to Hungary he is killed by the Turks in the battle of Esztergom (official distributor synopsis)
