Sharkey " is superb in the title role" (Variety) as singer/songwriter Vinne Vacarri, the man with the moves, the songs, the voice and the know-how to become a star. What he doesn't have is a face that'll make teenage girls swoon. But Vinnie has a plan. If he can't become the next teen idol, then he'll find the right face to play the part. Setting his sights on two awkard teens (Land and Gallagher) -- each short on talent but long on looks -- Vinnie transforms them into overnight singing sensations. But fashioning his creations was the easy part, it's his ability to control them that will determine the ultimate success -- or failure -- of the Idolmaker. (official distributor synopsis)

English Hackford has already demonstrated his interest in the behind-the-scenes of the American dream and its infinite ability to corrupt in this, his debut. Though his beginner's impatience is obvious, and thus he skips some scenes that would have been quite important in portraying the transformation of certain characters, but he makes up for it with his typical flair for incorporating seemingly unimportant details into the setting and characters. The scenes of the first successful performances of his tired, pomaded models are the tumultuous climax of every stage of this film, where the viewer enjoys the same exhilaration and satisfaction as the protagonist, having been along for the ride during his efforts to transform a total redneck into a soggy panty factory.
