Gyuri Kurta, the nephew of a well-off peasant is courting Rozsi, the beautiful girl of Zsiga the gipsy man. Zsiga's son Peti likes Éva who is the girl of a well-off peasant Márton. Éva's parents and Gyuri's uncle are watching evolving loves with hostility. While Peti is in the army instead of Gyuri, Éva's mother and Gyuri's uncle join forces to separate the lovers.
First they arouse Peti's death news, then in order to disillusionize Gyuri they spread the rumor that Rozsi is the mistress of a landowner's servant, Ferke. Their deceitful plan nearly succeeds, and they are preparing Gyuri's and Éva's wedding when Peti who was believed dead suddenly returns home from Italy with the landowner Várszegi who had patronized the talented Gypsy boy and launched him on a successful artistic career. Finally everything will be fine, Peti marries Evea, Gyuri and Rózsi are reconciled.
