Nelly Brunerová would be glad to marry her lover Vronský after her divorce, However, according to the law; she has to wait one year. On a trip to the Krkonoše Mountains Nelly begins to flirt with Renet, a friend of Vronský. Vronský then closes his life insurance policy and determines to put Nelly's love to the test. He sets out on a mountain climb and fakes a fall which supposedly results in his death. His body is never recovered and therefore Nelly has a legitimate claim to payment from the insurance policy only after one year. For the time being Nelly and Renet lead an extravagant life together. Renet falls into debt and perpetrates a fraud. Nelly refuses to help him out of his precarious situation. One day, to his great surprise, Renet meets Vronský, who helps him to settle his debts. On the anniversary of Vronský's death Nelly receives a copy of the will in which Vronský has bequeathed her only a piece of good advice - that she should change her way of life. Nelly tries in vain to win Vronský back. He is for her, lost, like her respectable life. (official distributor synopsis)
