Plots(1)

The rich and spoiled Amber Leighton (Madonna) spends the bulk of her husband's Mediterranean yacht voyage drinking, being bored, and insulting the crew. The class tables turn when she winds up lost at sea and eventually swept onto a deserted island with the same sailor she's been extra rude to all through the voyage. English Swept Away would have had a more powerful ending if everything that came before it had worked at least at the standard level of romantic relationship movies. The wacky Greek/Italian comedy approach is refreshing, but the characters and their behavior... and their portrayals by the actors (and a non-actress) are like a form of punishment. With respect to the genre, Ritchie’s directing is so loose and careless or incompetent (you can choose; we’ll know the truth only if he tries to make another romantic movie, which hopefully will never happen) that it’s impossible to connect with the characters, to believe anything about them, to feel anything for them or at least to not see them as annoying clowns. Inserting the beautiful orchestral piece “Spiegel am Spiegel”, especially in the aforementioned ending, is a futile attempt to give the film a romantic soul. ()

English I had no idea that Guy Ritchie ever shot such idiocy. Madonna portrays a solid bitch here, who could not even flush a shat-on toilet by herself. On top of that, she is cast away at a desolate island in the middle of Greece, which is bad in and of itself, and she ends up there with a creep who wants her, but at the same time doesn’t want to rape her. For some time it looks disgusting and then it transforms into love. The movie was as bad as a rubber anchor. ()

English After watching at least five unscheduled reruns, I still didn't get tired of Swept Away. The story of the money-spoiled Madonna, aka Amber, through the lens of her then-husband Guy Ritchie, is now also another closed chapter in the endless series about the life of the controversial icon. So what's next? A new marriage and another movie that will be hated on principle alone? Hopefully, Madonna will continue to have the energy to make more feature films, although such programmatic nonsensical hate would annoy anyone. ()
