In a town, that once belonged to Northern Hungary Mrs. Joób celebrates Christmas with his five-year-old son, Dénes, because his husband, Bálint is in Russian captivity. They have guests: the widower Noszlopy Géza, a town-councillor and her daughter, Éva. The feast is interrupted: the town is occupied by the Czechs. The Joóbs flee, but Noszlopy, as a councillor has to stay. Éva and Dénes meet in Budapest fifteen years later. Dénes escorts the girl in order to propose to her. With false charges the Czechs put him to prison, where he meets his father, who has been languishing there ever since he returned from captivity. Dénes is set free through Noszlopy's intervention and returns to Budapest. In the autumn of 1938 the town is annexed to Hungary again. The crowds pull down the pillars marking the border and set the innocent prisoners free. A rain of flowers welcomes the Hungarian soldiers who march in, Joób Dénes lieutenant among them.
