Set amidst the colorful backdrop of mid-20th century New York City, Rebel in the Rye follows a young Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) as he struggles to find his voice, pursues a love affair with famed socialite Oona O'Neill (Zoey Deutch), and fights on the frontlines of World War II. It's these experiences that will inform the creation of his masterpiece, The Catcher in the Rye, bringing him overnight fame (and notoriety) and leading him to withdraw from the public eye for the rest of his life. Co-starring Sarah Paulson, Rebel in the Rye offers a tantalising window into the life and times of a little-understood genius who broke the rules and redefined American literature. English Biopics about famous people I haven’t heard about before always have a hard job to win me over. I quite liked Nicholas Hoult’s Salinger, however, as well as Kevin Spacey in a typical mentor role. All in all, the film met my requirements, to the extent that now I really want to read Catcher in the Rye and think about how such a story was written by a person whom everybody predicted to never amount to anything… ()

English This is a classic good biopic that depends on its actors, with Nicholas Hoult handling his role in a great and professional manner, as well as Kevin Spacey, from whom I would expect nothing less. I still hope it's not his last role. The film is not unnecessarily exacerbated, has a fairly calm flow, and introduces Salinger to those who don't know him that well. ()
