English A decent film set in a psychiatric sanatorium where the Nazis sent patients to their deaths. Although they don't show any distressing and violent scenes, the film retains its disturbing quality, even though the main character is a 13-year-old boy. A good film, but the Danish The Day Will Come suited me a little better. 70% ()

English Setting the action in a Nazi asylum with horrific methods sounds very appealing, but don't be fooled, Fog in August is much closer to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in its intimacy and focus on both the good and the bad guys. Only that here there are child protagonists who behave like mature adults, and the Nazis do not inspire horror or moral revulsion, on the contrary, we almost feel sorry for them at times (Sebastian Koch is at least a little sympathetic in all circumstances, and Henriette Confurius is incredibly beautiful, truly an angelic bitch). Unfortunately, there is no emotional or physical naturalism to be found, this is just a nicely made mess of a psychiatric ward film that fails to capitalize on its pressing historical subtext in a way that will ever be remembered aloud... 55% ()
