By Chinese standards, this is a perfectly normal, mainstream story about forbidden love that looks at sex with humor, at physical punishment with perverse pleasure and at romantic love with picturesque poetry. By our standards, it is very exotic entertainment and mandatory viewing for all fans of Chinese culture. "Mun ching sap daai huk ying" looks like a historical film, but it's just a beautiful disguise because in reality, it's a multi-genre pop culture work that demonstrates, once again, that it's possible to combine all possible elements and still create something meaningful, holds it together, and is also entertaining.
