English An unconventional, but sincere tribute to resistance fighters, without pathetic phrases or emotional outpourings. Kadár and Klos rounded off some of the edges of Mňačko's novel, which only helped. The absence of interviews on the subject of the post-war government, which the communists were keenly waiting for, keeps any ideological ideas to a minimum, leaving only functioning filmmaking that is impossible not to succumb to. Then there is nothing left but two hours of watching a rough walk around Ploština, from which the viewer must inevitably take something away. ()

English I would say that it is the best film by the director duo Kadár and Klos. A raw and realistic war film that doesn't deny its strong autobiographical literary source by Ladislav Mňačko. A strong story and realistic fully-fleshed characters are the main advantages of this film. Unlike most productions from the era of real socialism, it is not superficially heroic and presents its heroes with all their vices and failures. It is not afraid to humanize the enemy or show, in the form of two deserters joining the partisans, that during the war there was nothing unequivocal. Overall impression: 95%. ()
