Originating in a children's book series by Finnish author Tove Jansson, the anthropomorphic family called the Moomins, denizens of the picturesque Moomin Valley, are arguably Finland's most cherished cultural exports. Their tales have touched families the world over across countless media. In this latest stop motion film, as winter falls upon the valley and the Moomins prepare to hibernate, young Moomintroll can only wonder what the season actually brings when they're asleep. His curiosity is piqued further when he learns a mysterious guest named Christmas is on his way, soon to be knocking on their door. And so Moomintroll clambers out his window into a strange, unpredictable, sometimes harsh, but hauntingly beautiful new world. Moomintroll soaks in the sights and creatures while preparing the valley for Christmas' arrival, soon joined in this endeavor with his parents Moominpappa and Moominmamma, and by friends such as the rambunctious Little My and the insightful Too Ticky. As they work together to please their incoming visitor, they gradually unravel what it all means as they learn valuable lessons about community, friendship, and kindness, and discover the warmth of their presence is truly Christmas' greatest gift. With its wholesome spirit, and its cut-out animation style evoking childlike wonder, Moomins and the Winter Wonderland is sure to bring out the inner child in even the most cynical hearts.
