Alec and Sasa are a couple in love on a trip to the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sasa is uneasy about being back in a place she thought she'd permanently escaped. Her instincts tell her that they are surrounded by something evil. As they go deeper into the forest and their car breaks down, Sasa clings deeply to her hamajlija - a Muslim amulet - to keep her safe. However it's not long before the couple run into two hunters, Vuk and Milos. It's this encounter that will be the reckoning for all four people, but the results will be nothing like anyone could have imagined. (Fantastic Fest)

English I found the Spanish production The Maus an attempt to make a slightly different sort of horror movie with a relatively classic theme. It is an attempt that tries for originality. However, it shows the problems with original concepts in that it sometimes ends up a bad movie, and this is clearly the case with The Maus, which is not suspenseful, moving, or frightening. ()

English Though impressive with its dark atmosphere, The Maus is a not very well executed film dealing with the trauma of the Bosnian war. The incoherent sequence of scenes in the first third is later explained but doesn’t erase the impression of the director’s failure. An unnecessary, supposedly disturbing epilogue that does not make any sense in the context of the plot only serves to further prove this point. [Sitges FF] ()
