The film is based on a novel by Friedrich Ani, a master in telling melancholic tales of lost souls. Famed German director and master of his trade, Volker Schlöndorff, turned this tale into a film – in his way, naturally. The story unfolds after the tragic suicide of a 17-year-old. The father acts as if all of the neighbors’ suspicions about his erotic dispositions could be true. The mother believed in anything and anyone, except in herself and her husband. Yet ultimately, the film revolves around what’s at the core of every thriller: the search for the truth. In contrast to most other contemporary thrillers, every detail not related to solving the case is much more important than those that are. And the final answer to the problem is considerably less important than the many possibilities and assumptions leading there. (Internationales Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg)
