After a traumatic incident, criminal psychologist and former police detective Takakura (Hidetoshi NISHIJIMA) moves to a new neighborhood with his wife Yasuko (Yuko TAKEUCHI) to make a fresh start. Upon meeting their new neighbors, the Nishinos, Takakura senses something odd about them. Then he is approached by the Nishinos' daughter, whose shocking whispered confession shatters the serenity of his new life: "That man in my house is not my father... He's a total stranger." The return of Kurosawa to horror thrillers certainly lives up to its name. It’s very creepy in some places, especially during the first half, where the clash of the main character and his wife with their weird neighbour is only hinted at. Then it goes into full insanity, which, together with the fact that we are in Japan and the characters sometimes do questionably, almost senseless things, creates a pretty special experience. Actually, I’m not sure whether this film is actually interesting and originally unsettling and gripping, or stupidly put together. It could also have been shorter, but given that I went to it expecting to get bored sooner or later, which in the end didn’t happen, this is more a statement than a complaint. 7/10
