The best American detective, Nick Carter, comes to Art Nouveau Prague to solve a tricky case - and to taste local beer and fall in love. This parody of trashy detective stories brought together Oldřich Lipský, writer Jiří Brdečka and artist Jan Švankmajer. (Summer Film School)

A beautiful film and a wonderful example of how rich, entertaining, funny, and inventive Czech cinema can be. All the actors are clearly enjoying their roles, just as everyone else enjoyed the story, the special effects, and everything else. Adela Has Not Had Her Supper Yet is literally a national treasure and an example of the great films we used to make. We wouldn't be able to manage something similar nowadays. We're not playful, and we're not capable of connecting intelligent humor with an interesting story. One looks back with fondness on these amazing old classics. ()
Great comedy, which I enjoy watching repeatedly just like The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians. Excellent humor accompanied by luxurious effects from the workshop of Švankmajer woven into a brisk crime story. Simply Lipský, Dočolomanský, Hrušinský, Kopecký - that's a real guarantee of quality fun. ()
A timeless classic for me, and an incredibly balanced film. There is something in it for everyone, perhaps with the exception of vegetarians, because not even the plants denied themselves meat, and commissioner Ledvina was basically a human advertisement for the meat industry. The feminists must have been disgusted with the character of Květuška, who was completely dependent on the help of the manly Nick Carter. Then again, they must have been thrilled by Olga Schoberová, who gave an excellent performance as Karin, the steam locomotive fireman. Oldřich Lipský really excelled at writing parodies. Casting Michal Dočolomanský in the lead role was a great move. ()
