Bloudění orientačního bežce was originally intended to fulfill the requirement for another Spartakiad film, but the former national pentathlon champion Matula took over the direction. It would have been possible to approach the sports material more sensitively, but the script would have had to be written by someone more experienced than Sovják, who at that time was only a writer of a few undergraduate short stories. The theme of a searching immature individual could have been engaging even during this time period, but it lacked the support of better-led professional actors to bring out the raw authenticity of the children's performances.
