A year after a deadly bomb attack in Denmark, ultra-nationalist politician Martin Nordahl and his National Movement are leading in the polls. Influenced by his unabashedly anti-immigrant rhetoric, society has rapidly turned on ethnic minorities, especially those with an Arab background. In this climate, 19-year-old Zakaria feels compelled to act to protect his own and his family’s safety. However, to do what he feels is necessary to turn the political tide, he needs to abandon his mother and little brother. Zakaria gets involved in a radical organisation, where he forms a bond with Ali. The two men cannot agree with the current state of the country, which is turning on its own citizens because of their migration background, and decide to act. However, they are both just tools in the hands of people with power. As the men try to make their mark, their brotherhood will be tested and their actions will have grave consequences on their lives. English This is an ambitious and socially engaged film about the dangers of growing extremism and that members of certain ethnic groups should not be categorized the same, and that each violent solution produces more violence. The film begins as a drama about a young man who joins a group of Arab radicals in an effort to protect his family, and then continues as a political thriller about fear and hatred in society and on opportunist politicians who exploit both to their advantage in a populistic way. This ideologically-current film can be praised for working with an important theme and precisely aimed message, but overall, it is brought down by average directing, pace that is too slow and insufficiently engaging and simplified implementation. English A spiral of hatred and extremism where the violence and intolerance of one side results in even more intolerance from the other. Or how some lunatics prevail over other lunatics. The subject is relevant, but I felt that the film was simplistic in several aspects and not entirely believable. For example, I can’t believe that a main political party would push so hard for such an explicitly controversial agenda. The ending is quite cathartic, especially if you applied it to the current Czech environment, but only until you realise what would follow – not a calmed situation, for sure. #KVIFF2019 ()
