This thriller from Henri‑Georges Clouzot, which shocked audiences in Europe and the U.S., is the story of two women- the fragile wife and the willful mistress of the sadistic headmaster of a boys' boarding school- who hatch a daring revenge plot. With its unprecedented narrative twists and terrifying images, Diabolique is a heart-grabbing benchmark in horror filmmaking, featuring outstanding performances by Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, and Paul Meurisse. English Although I am in the minority with this, but I doubt that Hitchcock would have filmed this any better, if he’d managed to buy the rights to the story. His version would not necessarily have been any worse, but he certainly would have typically stylized it in his own way. But this was so wonderfully down to earth and convincing, that it would have been a shame to spoil it with unnecessarily stylization. And even if he were to film this better, he would have had a hard job finding a better cast. P.S.: And I join in with the piety reigning here and won’t even mention the remake. ()
