English I'm a bit nervous about the new generation of Barbie cartoons. In the 80's there was a rare attempt at 2D, the whole Barbie and the Rockers storyline was a response to the then very popular Jem and the Holograms brand. After the year 2000 came a long series of 3D cartoons that integrated classic themes, fairy tales, ballets, all nice serious themes into the Barbie world. For those who wanted something cornier, they had the Fairytopia storyline. My Scene and The Barbie Diaries did their own thing, but the main Barbie was something even an adult didn't have to be ashamed of. After a decade, Barbie has withstood the competition in the form of the Monster High movies and series. But since the main style started to resemble the Aqua parody again, I've given up on it. The last big film was Star Light Adventure (2016), and in Dolphin Magic (2017) the baton was symbolically passed to a new generation. So what's going to be the next modern feature film? After the kitsch domination of Life in the Dreamhouse, will it be Dreamtopia and Dreamhouse Adventures? It’s all tired recycling of the same thing. Barbie has a series crew around her and is once again interchanging her life with a real princess. Social networks play a crucial role and because it's a musical, Barbie has to make it clear within the song that she doesn't want to share anything that isn't true. No stylized posts. Prior Barbie movies were above the fray and kids were educated about the contemporary world by someone else, now Barbie has to do it too. The genre has changed from fairy tales to what used to be called cultural films. Honestly, I don't consider that direction to be ideal in any way. ()
