In 1942, fearing a rebellion by Serb partisans, high ranking officers of the Hungarian army raided Bácska, in the culmination of which some 2500 Serbs and 800 Jews were shot into the hole cut in the Danube ice. Participants of the raids Ä four military man: a gentry staff-officer, a chief sailor of middle-class origin, an ensign of peasant origin and a corporal Ä recall their memories while waiting for the judgement of the people's tribunal in common cell. Through the monologues their drama comes to light: the formal moves they have made for conscience's sake on the way of building their careers could not substitute for taking moral responsibilities.
