Old wounds are reopened and new ones forged when an aspiring teen writer arrives to spend a summer with a quirky children's author and his emotionally devastated wife. Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) is a writer of children's stories who lives in East Hampton with his wife Marion (Basinger) and four-year-old daughter Ruth. Since the tragic loss of their two sons nearly a decade earlier, the couple's marriage has been strained by Ted's affairs and Marion's depression. But with the arrival of Eddie--a 16-year-old who is spending his summer break as Ted's assistant--things finally reach a breaking point as Marion becomes passionately involved with the youth...while coming to grips with her future.
