William Wellman directed this issue-packed depression-era drama in which a wounded ex-doughboy named Tom Holmes (Richard Barthelmess) comes home addicted to the needle. After kicking the morphine addiction--which he suffered as a result of being wounded as a soldier--he befriends a crackpot anarchist. Soon the crackpot makes them both millionaires, but then the real trouble beings. (official distributor synopsis)
