Empire of the Sun (1987)

English Spielberg can tell these stories like no-one else (in this case, so well that I'm surprised he wasn't awarded the golden statuette) and in an incredible way he was able to capture the atmosphere of the Second World War from a perspective I've probably never seen before. Christian Bale had already shown with his first role that great things could be expected of him, and in twenty years he’s managed to prove it, as evidenced by his current roles. Plus, John Malkovich and Joe Pantoliano make an excellent duo, and when Ben Stiller showed up I couldn't believe my eyes. It's quite fun to watch older movies with actors who were new stars at the time.

Snake Eyes (1998)

English I originally only gave this movie three stars. I don't understand why. I guess I was too young then to appreciate Brian De Palma's great story and genius. The guy clearly enjoys working with the camera. And in Snake Eyes, he finally took full advantage of this. The opening shot which lasts for a quarter of an hour is almost unparalleled. On top that Nicolas Cage and Gary Sinise are playing as if their lives depended on it. Just superb. A picture that was ahead of its time.

Mr. Brooks (2007)

English A cute movie with lots of funny lines and with a well-thought out and occasionally surprising story. Kevin Costner is back from the swamp of below-average movies and his Mr. Brooks is simply great. The only one in this movie to give a better performance is his "dark passenger" William Hurt, whispering at and egging on "man of the year" to do his dirty deeds.

The Abyss (1989)

English A stunning sci-fi film with incredible visual effects for its time and excellent performances. Cameron is great, everything he touches becomes cinema gold.

Stargate: Continuum (2008)

English The best SG-1 for the last few years. Time travel and journeying through parallel worlds have always been my thing and I always manage to enjoy them. The story, to my surprise, was really successful because I honestly couldn't figure out how the creators were going to fit all the things that were being talked about into one cohesive whole. They did a great job, and they surprised me several times with twists that, even for me, were unexpected. Too bad they didn’t add a quarter of an hour to the movie and play around a little bit with life in the "new" world, then there'd be plenty of room for a few more clever touches. As far as the cast is concerned, they were simply great. So many familiar faces. Richard Dean Anderson is a little chubbier, as he has been in all his recent Stargate guest appearances, but his wisecracks are better than they used to be when he was younger. Speaking of wisecracks, Michael Shanks, as Daniel Jackson, tosses them off the cuff one after the other, winning my personal award for the movie's best wisecracker. My last words belong to General "Don S. Davis" Hamond, who died a few days ago, and Continuum is one of his last films. We're going to miss you.

Batman: Gotham Knight (2008)

English Have I Got A Story For You: An impressive entry into the world of the Dark Knight. Thanks to the exaggerated stories of a bunch of teenagers, we get an insight into the mind of a child and see how it reacts to the unknown. In their eyes, Batman could be a strange mutant or even a robot. I like the artwork, as well as the screenplay. Very well done.***** Crossfire: A regular story about two of Gordon's detectives, where one doesn't trust Batman and sees him as just another villain. However, the two of them get into a huge shootout and Someone has to intervene.*** Field Test: An interesting morality tale involving the testing of a new Fox invention. Finally, a story where we are with Batman from start to finish. Plus, there's a very nice golf course here. I'm more and more attracted to this sport. I have to try it out sometime. ;-)***** In Darkness Dwells: The darkest Batman. Unarguably. Plus, we meet an old acquaintance, Scarecrow and his hallucinogenic gas. And the fight with Killer Croc was very intense.***** Working Through Pain: A flashback to the time when Bruce Wayne learned not to feel pain. Great story and amazing animation (mainly the sunshine).***** Deadshot: As they say, 'save the best for last', and I think Batman: Gotham Knight managed to do just that. To my eyes, the most delectable animation and the finale fight on the train will surely please everyone. *****

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs (2008) (video compilation)

English I was missing Futurama for a while already and I was looking forward to another movie. And I wasn’t disappointed. The head of the robot league suited Bender better than his time traveler role. The scene when he is riding on a tank to declare a war on mankind is one of the most iconic moments of the entire movie. Great entertainment. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait for another portion. And now please excuse me. I’m going to read ‘The End of Eternity’ by Issac Asimov. ;-) Bender’s iconic scene no. 2: Bender standing alone on a green meadow and saying “Death to the people".

In Bruges (2008)

English I saw the trailer for In Bruges when I happened to arrive a bit early for Iron Man and, well, it captured my attention. What’s so special about that? Nothing. But it never happened to me before. I usually watch trailers in the peace of my home, so I know what’s going on (thanks to the guys at MovieZone ;-). Long story short, the movie me even more than the excellent trailer. Two hired killers arrive in a medieval town full of historical monuments for a holiday. And one of them is carrying a memory with him of the last murder, which went wrong in the worst possible way. Collin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson both excel throughout, joined from the second half of the movie by Ralph Fiennes, who I’ve never heard as foulmouthed as he was here. Well I have to take my hat off to the director Martin McDonagh. His debut is already among the best movies produced this year.

Street Kings (2008)

English A story of necessary evil. Following Harsh Times, David Ayer has succeeded with another probe into the underworld of Los Angeles. Ludlow is a great dirty hero who reels out one off the cuff wisecrack after another, and Keanu Reeves is right at home in this strange cowboy’s boots. Forest Whitaker is clearly enjoying his character, and Hugh Laurie has easily shaken off his House image. In terms of the overall plot, it can jump from predictable situations to unexpected and downright surprising endings (e.g. shovel in the head). I admit to a little hesitation in my rating because it wasn't clear-cut. At first I considered giving it 4.5 stars, but this kind of movie is just my cup of tea, and in this genre, Street Kings is the best thing I’ve recently beheld.

Narc (2002)

English A really good thriller with great acting performances and great direction. The predictable plot is masterfully told by Carnahan, and his back is covered by the great Ray Liotta and, unexpectedly, Jason Patric. And the conclusion that is assembled throughout the film through flashbacks worked out seriously well.
