The Mandalorian - Chapter 9: The Marshal (2020) (episode)

English A classic western opening using Fett as a lure. Favreau succeeded in increasing the budget and makes a bow to Dune. There are more special effects and they a done better. It doesn’t move forward much in terms of story, but horizons broaden nicely. Baby Yoda in the urinal is just great.

Frozen II (2019)

English The Fifth Element for kids. This quite well-made sequel reinforces the mythology and has lots of surprises in store that will absolutely thrill girls. And the moment when Anna sacrifices the city for a higher purpose is pretty shocking. Some songs are a little poor and a little less room is given to Kristoff would have been welcome. Olaf is the best, of course.

Over Fingers (2019)

English It would have been better without Kolečko. Apart from the attractive scenes connected with the ballgame (cut to a minimum), this has nothing to offer. Langmajer is completely wrong for this film and the fact that he has nothing special to offer in terms of acting makes that even more obvious. As is the habit in Czech films, the characters are just dumb and behave irrationally simply for the purpose of creating supposedly funny situations.

Ozark - Season 3 (2020) (season)

English Stretched to the extreme. Season three begins slowly with the test run in the casino, but it turns into an emotional high-caliber rollercoaster ride. Bateman’s calculating Marty is still great, but this season stands primarily on Wendy’s shoulders, with her going from clever woman into a ball of nerves.

Living with Yourself (2019) (series)

English A pleasant movie about clones, a bit in the vein of Multiplicity. Rudd delivers an incredible performance in both roles. His devastated and bored Miles is unexpectedly realistic, while watching the happy Miles descend into depression is just plain funny, with an ingenious climax in front of the mirror. The ending unfortunately takes the film back to safe ground, but I don’t have any fundamental problem with that. This is no super sci-fi probe into the psyche, but quality entertainment for half an hour during lunch or before going to bed.

Unhinged (2020)

English An offended fatty against the impolite world… To be perfectly honest from the very start, without Oscar-winner Russell Crowe, this film would be complete trash. With Russell, who sets men on fire, kicks women and strangles children, it’s quite entertaining. Because it’s not too long, the film flows easily and I spent most of the time thinking up different alternative plots that would be more original. And asking questions… Couldn’t the mom have been less nice? Couldn’t Borte film the car chases dynamically and play around a bit with paranoia? Why the heck did Russell agree to do this?

Maniac (2018) (series)

English An unexpected, multi-genre construct that gives Fukunaga the chance to flex all of his directorial muscles. A comedy, drama and action movie. Hill’s acting is a bit strained at the start (probably because of his diet), while Stone is full-on. Everything is superbly explained, easy to follow and, despite the complexity of the ideas presented, understandable. Great work in which I would like to have seen a bit more depth.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

English A top notch courtroom drama, perfectly cast, excellently acted. It grabs you and doesn’t let go. Sorkin’s polished dialogs, purposeful messages and hard-hitting lines flow naturally and the picture as a whole builds up nicely to a great climax. What a ride.

Maniac - Utangatta (2018) (episode)

English Best episode yet. The marvelous intro with Hill’s Icelandic over-acting and loony Emma in the main role grabs you by the throat. The shootout in the hall is luxury and the finale with the Rubik’s cube is super. Great build up to finale. Humor, action and textbook denouement.
