DOTA: Dragon's Blood (2021) (series)

English Netflix hit the gaming phenomenon Dota and created an engaging anime series that captivates fans of the game and anime adaptations. It is a beautiful fantasy world with elves, bandits, mages, and dragons, likable characters, beautiful artwork, decent and intense R-rated action, captivating exploration, and an interesting story that definitely grabs and never becomes boring, and I am grateful for the short 30-minute episodes. I am more of a fan of the game, and I don't actively watch anime series, but I enjoyed this one. The design of the dragons is amazing, and once blood starts splattering from them, there is nothing to complain about. 8/10.

Bad Trip (2020)

English Toilet American humor with a scatological and twisted subtext, hidden camera with an absolutely disarming Tiffany Haddish, who gives the most interesting performance of her career. If you liked Bad Grandpa and similar stuff, you will enjoy this as well. Sometimes it is a bit cringe and cheesy, but you can still laugh. The gorilla rape and the crazy vomiting scene in the club caught my attention. 6/10.

Violation (2020)

English No, really not! The rape and revenge subgenre is my favorite, and there hasn’t been a proper representative for quite a few years now. Violation gave some hope, but no. It continues the new trend in the horror scene, which is more annoying than the previous one (found footage), now it is about turning horror into drama and this year there is so much of it that I'm really starting to get fed up with it. Violation is a typical drama, it’s slow, nothing happens there, the actors are unlikeable, and the plot is even dull and uninteresting for a drama. In foreign reviews mention words like shocking, disturbing, and brutal, but maybe that's for people for whom cutting a throat is the maximum threshold of tolerance. There was only one brutal scene, the sawing off of a leg, which I would applaud in a five-minute short, but not in a two-hour feature film where most of the time is spent staring into space or the camera focuses on lengthy empty shots. Disgusting. One star for the leg, the second for the relatively decent technical side, otherwise it's completely pointless and an insult to the genre!! 3/10.

The Banishing (2020)

English Christopher Smith, director of the great Triangle and Black Death, delivers a gothic ghost story set in late 1930s England, in a mansion that hides a terrifying secret. The horror is skillfully mastered, the cinematography is impressive, the performances are more than solid – especially Sean Harris who steals most of the film for himself – and the period setting is faithful. It moves at a slightly slower pace, but I was attentive even at 2 am, and at times it is decent hallucinogenic with very effective and chilling scares (the walks through narrow underground corridors are impressive). There were also two nasty jump-scares, and I liked the religiously soaked atmosphere and the creepy monks with hoods. An old-school haunted house movie that works, but mainstream viewers may get bored. It is definitely not as boring as Saint Maud and The Night. Unfortunately, The Power beats The Banishing. 6-5/10.

Odd Thomas (2013)

English I enjoyed this mysterious and entertaining thriller, which I inexplicably missed back then, and it's cool. Odd is a likable character with the ability to see the dead and prevent tragedies. When the "Bodachs", harbingers of death, start appearing in town, he senses that a major disaster is approaching. The film nicely blends genres, from comedy, romance, and thriller to mystery and action. It's a bit disappointing that it doesn't particularly excel in any aspect, but it's still enjoyable to watch. The plot is interesting and captivating, and it offers a few surprises, and an action-packed finale. It's an entertaining movie, although its runtime of two hours and the relatively unexpected sad ending may somewhat detract from it. 6.5/10.

When They See Us (2019) (series)

English This is bad. Another overhyped drama for intellectuals and girls who cry. Five teenagers are accused of an attack in Central Park (obviously they don’t show the rape). The film spends one hour at the police station where they are forced under psychological pressure to confess their guilt. It's somewhat watchable, but nothing really interesting or new happened, no empathy or emotions whatsoever. However, the highlight is episode 2, which takes place in court. I definitely enjoyed the trial and Vera Farmiga plays a nice bastard willing to sacrifice the lives of five young people for her career. That’s where the series should have ended, but there are another three hours of material that no one cares about, nothing fucking happens there!! I had no connection to the characters, so it was comparable to the suffering of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I fell asleep three times and almost deleted Netflix, I was so pissed off. Two stars for the trial, otherwise a showcase of everything I hate in movies. 3/10.

Heart of Karl (2008)

English It's cheap, it's old, it's terrible. The make-up and visual effects look like they're from Power Rangers, the image is barely 5 pixels, the blood couldn't be properly seen, the CGI is like from the 90s, there's no honest manual work. Well, it was excruciating to watch even those twenty minutes. 1 Star, I don't even know why.

Changing Sides (2008)

English It may not be wild enough for a French film, but it's certainly cool. After a long time, Dany Boon doesn't play completely clueless character, and the idea of husbands exchanging their roles, including work, is really cool. But the best thing is the character of the court-appointed official, who oversees all of this. Antoine Duléry is really awesome, and the scenes with him are among the funniest, but unfortunately there aren't as many of them. I enjoyed it, it goes by quickly, but I expect something better from France. 6/10.

Flowers (2015)

English Multiply The Human Centipede and A Serbian Film x 2 and you get Flowers!! Not recommended for weak characters with weak stomachs, there is a risk of health damage! It's a dark depressing thing! Flowers is a cheap underground movie that is definitely not for the mainstream and normal audience. But it is also not downright stupid with no plot, there is more here than anyone would have thought before watching it. It is silent, so not a word is spoken for the whole film. We follow the plot only through symbols, images and metaphors, which is interesting but requires a certain amount of attention and imagination. In a way, it is a kind of perverse art for jaded viewers. The film takes place in a place called Crawlspace, where six dead girls are going through their purgatorial "pre-crawl", crawling amongst decomposing corpses, entrails, dirt and shit. Into this, of course, we find out about their previous lives through photos and peeks into rooms. At the same time, we also get to see what the sleazy pervert above them is doing in the house, and at times he does some really insanely twisted things in there that I didn't care for. The whole thing takes place in a disgusting setting, the music is very impressive and disturbing, the actresses who went into it have my personal respect, the atmosphere is surreal and the make-up and the practical effects are good. (The scene where one girl wants to stuff her guts back into her stomach hit me the hardest). I've definitely never seen anything like this and anyone who likes weird, experimental and twisted films would be in for a treat. Others won't pick up the film, will condemn it and throw it in the trash, which is perfectly normal for a film this controversial. I, however, will probably never forget it. 7/10.

Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan (2021) (series)

English A must for fans of samurai, history and Japanese culture! Age of Samurai tells the powerful story of the unification of Japan during the Sengoku period, with the most famous Daimyo Oda Nobunaga, Ieyasu Tokugawa and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The series has great sets, naturalistic brutal action scenes, and for the fact that it's semi-documentary style, there's blood aplenty. The story itself is also riveting, with classic intrigue, betrayal and politicking, all delivered in the highest quality. I enjoyed it very much, I liked the explanation of several important Japanese terms, it's suspenseful, informative enough, and pleasing enough action. 8/10.
