Speed Racer (2008)

English So colorful... Oh yeah, this movie just blew me away. It raised the bar. I just loved it ;-) I waited, I went through it, and it paid off. I put it on at the exact moment I needed it the most. At the moment when it could consume me. Maybe if I'd let it in just a moment later or earlier, it wouldn't have gotten full marks. Clever as can be. :-D It's got juice.

Vampire Knight (2008) (series)

English The first season gets off to a very enjoyable start. You watch, you watch, and then suddenly it's over without learning anything of substance, the events are just a jumble in your head as you deduce "what's going on". But the second season pushes you hard at the beginning, nothing really happens, theoretically everything is the same – and then suddenly! You watch, you watch, and everything starts to fall into place. Awesome! Yeah, I'm very happy with this anime. You get everything here – somewhat of a story, vampires, Kuran Kaname ;-) plus some of Headmaster Cross' gags are great, especially in the second season, plus – it would be a mistake not to mention him – Zero is definitely no zero :-) I'll take it, I'll take it, and I might as well go watch it again, which doesn't happen that often, that I would want to watch something twice. But here... why not? =o) /// Well, apparently my hormone levels have changed a bit again since then, and when I watch it again after a long time, I really just put on an episode here and there, reminisce, I think: "Oh, yeah, yeah, nicely drawn, nice music, bishi, bishi, God, but it's annoying!" :-D It can't be helped, my rating has to go down a bit, so from the original 4 stars I’m giving a passable 3 stars :-)

Máj (2008)

English Hynek! Vilém! Jarmila! The music was the best thing about the whole movie. The visual cues could have been better (What's the matter Brabec, are you selling yourself short? Or was this an attempt at "pure art" or something? :) ) But no, it worked, but he should have relied more on Mách, on his verses, that was the driver of all of May. Vilém unconvincing, Jarmila a bimbo who commits suicide all the way at the end (!); why not at the beginning? Anyway, as was already said: "Mr. Director, next time rely more on the subject matter! BUT I commend you for Tříska: it's a good thing he was there, his ‘dead mistress sensibility’ made my day better right away." :-) Hm, but I still would have done it completely differently.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) (series)

English If I only enjoy the parts with Angel in them, and there are damn few of those... Fortunately, there is a very good replacement in the form of Spike ;-) And for the finale I will raise it by a star. That’s how it’s gotta be. 28 Oct 2010 – correction: What's a really big positive for me about this series is the fact that the vampires here aren't made into beautiful breakers of girls' hearts, but their likeness is nothing that a normal person would want to kiss.

The Happening (2008)

English Well, I don't know, I'm kind of on the fence about this... If that's supposed to be a warning, it's a pretty lame one... in any case, I see it as the story of two people who didn't get along very well, their marriage stagnated, but thanks to something going on in the background that made them see a lot of dead bodies, they got back together... I guess :D

The Can (2007)

English I passed on this movie for a long time. Now I'm thinking: “Why?" But then I just wave my hand over it: "Maybe it's better that way. Today was the right mood for it..." Yes, you have fun at some parts, sometimes you’re saying to yourself: "That's exactly what we did. Ugh, goniometric functions!", sometimes you might be sad... Sometimes I have the feeling that we can't get enough of these "Czech" films. Every film that goes to the cinema must inexorably smell like "ours". How would a true popcorn spectacle end up in this country? And why am I writing about this here? Yeah, the Lord moves in mysterious ways... ;) Oh and: I don’t know why, but it seems to me that Czechs still haven’t learned how to film a kiss. I don't know what it is, but it seems that way to me. I'd rather watch an American one. Yikes.

Kachorra (2002) (series)

English Too bad I don't know how it turned out... ;) EDIT.: 22 Apr 2019 – well I finished watching it. It makes you sick, you just have to watch it. The worst part was that all the "main" plots (out of the 150 or so it has) were resolved in one episode. For having the space of 150 episodes, that's really a shame and terribly wrong. Otherwise, it's a classic, whiny, wacky soap opera where I think everyone wants to hobble everyone else.

Equilibrium (2002)

English I'd take those nifty sleeves and pockets, too... What would the world be like if we couldn't feel? Like this? Better? Worse? Would it even be at all? No, I don't want to know. I feel. You feel. We feel. And that’s how it will be as long as the last person breathes. A very beautiful film. Makes me think a lot – once the credits start rolling, that is. Otherwise, I enjoyed the spectacle throughout. The shooting and the hidden emotions. I hate strict regimes; that is, unless they're breaking down.

1408 (2007)

English I like Stephen King a lot. It's just that not all adaptations of his books are excellent. Unfortunately, I haven't had the privilege of reading the book, so I can't compare this time, but if I were to rate the movie, and I probably should since I'm typing this blabber here, it would be four stars. But for what, though? For the atmosphere? John Cusack's performance? The storyline? The satisfying ending, where the wife's bulging eyes confirm that her husband really did experience something? I add it up, I scratch twice, and yeah, it's a well-deserved 4 stars. Definitely for me.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

English Cruel and sadistic, which is why it will appeal to the era of today. It's just that sometimes I don't fit into the era of today, so I guess that's why I wasn't as impressed with Sweeney as I thought I’d be. And I was looking forward to it so much. I was expecting something different, which is fine, my ideas are always "romantic". I guess what disappointed me the most was that the story was so readable, his actions so predictable. Such a pity. But even my favorite actors and their performances didn't can’t make me give more stars... Sometimes love is cruel, but why prove it with a razor and forget it?
