Moby Dick (1998) (TV movie)

English A very weak TV adaptations of Melville’s novel. Very cheap, lacklustre direction and acting, and poor visual effects. Patrick Stewart, I forgive you, but go back to Star Trek or the X-Men.

Lost in Space (1998)

English The film that knocked Titanic off the top of the weekly attendance chart. That is the only interesting thing about it.

Mortal Kombat (1995)

English A thoroughbred B-movie that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. As the saying goes, it’s so silly it’s beautiful. A perfectly relaxing affair where you can safely switch off your brain and you won’t be mad if someone makes noise with their pop-corn or cheers in the cinema. Anderson is a clever B-movie maker who, for a small budget, offered me a 100-minute PC game converted to film strip, with zero plot and wrapped in attractive packaging. Just a nice silly but fun thing. :)

Conan the Destroyer (1984)

English The second film on the Conan franchise is not even close to its predecessor. Even Basil Poledouris did a dodgy job.

Fatherland (1994) (TV movie)

English A story based on the hypothesis of what would have happened if the Germans had won World War II. The premise is pretty interesting, the execution not so much. It's sad for me to see Rutger Hauer, once the replicant Roy in Blade Runner, dabble in B-movie projects like this.

The Fifth Element (1997)

English If this sci-fi film didn't feature an individual named Chris Tucker, I swear my rating would be higher, but I hate that blabbermouth. It’s a pity Bruce Willis didn’t shoot him to the moon.

Three Kings (1999)

English Originally shot action scenes, an interesting story, great cast lead by Mark Wahlberg, whose performance, especially in the second half is Oscar worthy, all that make Three Kings a must-see film.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

English A great film with a surprising, non-Hollywood ending – but since it’s based on a true story, they couldn’t end it in any other way. Otherwise, had I seen it on TV, I would give it three stars, because the way the people at ILM created those stormy seas can only be enjoyed in the big screen. But I’m not saying anything new.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

English A brilliant reflection on the nature not only of Christianity, but of faith in general. A film with a thought-provoking screenplay that shatters the conventional views of dogmatic individuals who may not like Scorsese's thoughtful, different view of the figure of Jesus Christ. It’s also brilliant visually. The crucifixion scene is compositionally stunning, and note also that in the Stations of the Cross to Golgotha Scorsese was inspired by the paintings of the old Dutch masters, I mean the posture of the people, their gestures and expressions. I consider the burning down of cinemas by radical Christian groups at the premiere of the film to be the result of a profound misunderstanding of Scorsese's seminal work. PS: Gabriel's unconventional soundtrack is equally brilliant.

Dead Man Walking (1995)

English A profound and intense experience. A gripping drama about the need for truth, the difficulty of accepting the truth and the courage to look death in the eye with peace of mind. Brilliantly written, brilliantly directed and phenomenally acted by the lead duo. Susan Sarandon deserved the Oscar, Sean Penn only got a nomination, but you will never forget his character of a death-row inmate. It also got nominations for best film and direction. I must not forget the great title track by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh. I recommend it to all supporters of the death penalty, maybe they’ll change their views...
