Andrey Konchalovskiy

He was born in Moscow in 1937 in a family made up of artists (his brother is the filmmaker Nikita Mijalkov). He is one of the most remarkable Russian directors of the generation that emerged in the 70s. In his beginnings, he wrote together with Andrei Tarkovski the scripts of Ivan’s Childhood and Andréi Rubliov, and débuted in directing in 1966 with The First Teacher. His magnificence arrived in the 70s with works like Uncle Vanya (1971), awarded with the Silver Shell in the Festival of San Sebastián, A Lover’s Romance (1974), Jury Grand Prix in the Festival of Karlovy Vary, and the epic film of four chapters Siberiade (1979), Jury Grand Prix in Cannes. In the 80s Konchalovski moved to the United States and bursted into Hollywood with successes such as Runaway Train (1985) and Tango & Cash (1989). In the 90s he returned to Russia, and in this century he received two Silver Lions in Venice. His film Dear Comrades was awarded with the Jury Grand Prix in Venice.
