Biography

Having graduated from the FAMU in Prague, 1976 marked his debut with Cuvar plaze u zimskom periodu, winner of the Critics’ Prize in Berlin. He has made over 30 documentaries and 13 movies, all winners of awards at the most prestigious festivals in the world, including the Critics’ Prize for Best European Film in 1998 (FIPRESCI) for Bure batuta. Vreme cuda (1990) won the FIPRESCI Prize at San Sebastian. In 2001, Variety singled him out as one of the best five directors of the year (alongside Lasse Hallström, Neil Jordan, Steven Soderbergh and Edward Yang).
