Biography

A self-taught filmmaker born in Adatala, a remote town in India, he is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and of the French Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques. After filming several shorts and documentaries, in the 90s he decided to take the leap to feature films and engaged in a long process that lasted almost nine years until he gave shape to Samsara (2001), his debut feature, which after its premiere in Toronto and its participation in Rotterdam became a great commercial and critical success around the world, with more than thirty international awards such as the Grand Jury Prize at the AFI Fest and at Santa Barbara. He then filmed the romantic epic Valley of Flowers (2006), a co-production between Japan, France, Germany and India, and after making the documentary Faith Connections (2013) he returned to fiction in 2015 with Angry Indian Goddesses, which harvested the audience award at the Toronto and Rome festivals, and was commercially released in 60 countries.

After filming Beyond the Known World (2017), in 2021 he released Last Film Show, which won the Golden Spike at Seminci before be-ginning a brilliant trajectory punctuated by numerous awards at festivals such as Tribeca, Mill Valley, Austin Fest Texas, the LA Asian World Film Festival, Busan and the London Indian Film Festival. In addition, it managed to enter the ‘short list’ of the Oscars for best international film and won India’s two prestigious National Awards for Best Film along with six State Awards including Best Director and Best Screenplay. As a writer, Nalin’s tragicomedy screenplay Slightly Sane won the CJ Entertainment’s Award for The Best International Project at Asia Film Market, Busan, South Korea.
