The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari

Although I’d heard about the event in the media, my understanding of the setting and the scale of the disaster was very limited. This film gives a good glimpse into the heart of the action and it has to be said that it is not a pleasant sight. The whole event follows the classic recipe for disaster: "We know very well that something terrible can happen here at any moment, but we won't deal with it until it does." (12/30/2022)

The Volcano is a nice documentary, but unfortunately with few authentic shots from the scene of the event. It is therefore more powerful in the survivors’ accounts than in the horror felt as the was unfolding. To put things in perspective, the tragedy claimed 22 victims; the recent earthquake in Turkey claimed 49,580 victims. (03/19/2023)
