The "lawsuit of the century" is underway between Kárpáthy Zoltán, now an adult young man, and Abellino, for the possession of the Kárpáthies' fortune; Abellino sells his right to lawsuit to Kőcserepy, whose daughter was rescued by Zoltán during the big flood in Pest. Vilma, who suffers from a lung disease, falls in love with Zoltán, but he remains faithful to Szentirmay Katinka, his guardian's daughter. During the lawsuit, Abellino comes up with his principal argument, which is to say that Zoltán's father is Szentirmay, not Kárpáthy János. As a sign of protest at the slanderous remarks made at his late mother, Zoltán waives his right to the inheritance, leaving Kőcserepy in beneficiary position. Meanwhile, the documents upon which the lawsuit has been based turn out to be fake. Rudolf, innocent of all misdemeanours, falls victim of the conflict, sacrificing his life only to save Zoltán's, who is at once a happy inheritor and Katinka's future husband.
