Pacific Rim: The Black

Del Toro's Pacific Rim had its own fantasy-action charm and bore the director's visible audiovisual signature. The sequel, on the other hand, was more of a mindless action flick, but still brisk and silly in a teenager way. The animated Pacific Rim: The Black has more room for story building and despite a few teenage silly outbursts, it offers better drawn characters, and their backgrounds. The nearly three-hour running time flies by thanks to a dynamic story with several plot twists, and I was annoyed but at the same time actually pleased by the open ending. I appreciate that the creatirs didn't just copy the feature films, but also tried to develop the kaiju-jaeger mythology. Last but not least, besides the nice animation, I have to praise the soundtrack. (03/13/2021)
