The First Day of the Rest of Your Life (2008)

English I was curious to see this acclaimed French film, which I negligently overlooked, but in the end I'm inclined to be disappointed because it didn't grow on me. The idea and the way the story is told are definitely worth mentioning, unfortunately the humour is minimal, emotionally the film left me absolutely cold, the characters came across as uninteresting and nothing worth mentioning happened in the space of two hours. Actually quite a waste of time. Over-hyped to the point of woe. 55%

Two Night Stand (2014)

English Average romantic comedy with average actors. The humour is practically non-existent which is a significant downside for me. The film is watchable, but there are better pieces. 60%

YPF (2007)

English Four couples, one wild night and lots of sex from a different angle each time. Well, why not? Original idea, pretty women, decent humour and above all good fun. I had a good time. It's surprising how much the film has in common with reality. 75%.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

English The trailers for the new King Arthur were rather mediocre and few people were really looking forward to it, but I was all the more surprised by the positive reviews and reception. Guy Ritchie has a very distinctive style of directing and stands out very much above the rest, especially the editing is delivered very effectively and originally. Charlie Hunnam is likeable and fits the role like a glove, Jude Law is also an unusual and interesting role as the villain. There is not that much action, but when it comes to it it is quite good, especially the finale is decently paced. The soundtrack is also nice and the gritty visuals perfectly illustrate the atmosphere. Not a big hit, but an entertaining flick and definitely the best thing to come out of the fantasy genre in a while. 75%

Power Rangers (2017)

English The first half of the film is more than a pleasant teen silliness, is natural, heartfelt and doesn't play on anything, but once the action comes on the scene the satisfaction drops significantly. The visual effects are mediocre and I just didn't enjoy this kind of action. I found Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is from a similar vein (revival of a children's classic) much more attractive and entertaining. But it is watchable. 60%.

The Boss Baby (2017)

English A good idea and a nice fairy tale for kids, rather average for an adult. The animation is average, there is not much humour and it gave me the impression that the whole thing is more like a second hand cartoon. Fine to watch, though. 60%.

CHiPs (2017)

English A pretty okay action comedy with a funny Michael Peña and a weird Dax Shepard that didn't sit well with me. The movie goes by fast, it's funny, but the jokes were a bit too few for my taste. 55%

The Mummy (2017)

English The beginning of a new cinematic universe and one of the most entertaining blockbusters of the year. Tom Cruise is once again in Mission Impossible mode and there couldn't be a better choice for the main character. The great Russell Crowe, the beautiful Annabelle Wallis and the sexiest Mummy Sofia Boutella are also a delight. The film hits the gas right from the start and doesn't let up until the very end. The action is perfect, visually varied and imaginative, the film looks decently gritty for a PG 13, there are some scares and a slight horror atmosphere (the scene with the rats or spiders Brrr). The strongest moment for me was probably the plane crash, one of the most intense scenes of the year. After a long time I left the cinema excited, entertained and relaxed, and perhaps no one could expect more from a fun silly blockbuster. 85%.

The Belko Experiment (2016)

English The anticipated new release is out and even though much more could have been made of the excellent premise, a cautious thumbs up nonetheless. The first trailers for The Belko Experiment were very enticing and the film has thus ranked among the most anticipated things of this year. It’s clear: an enclosed building with 80 employees tasked with killing each other (friend-to-friend) is more than attractive stuff for a horror film, too bad they didn't have the courage to push the envelope more. Yes probably the most heads in the history of movies explode here at once, some of the employees turn out to be proper bastards (Tony Goldwyn rules the roost and his selective choice of who should survive and who shouldn't is one of the film's strongest moments). I was a bit disappointed that the executions, though quite ruthless, were mostly shootings, as a horror fan, especially of violence, I would have expected more play with axes, knives or other tools. The ending, although expected, was still a surprise and if there is ever a sequel I will be looking out for it. 70%.

Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

English A nice lively theme and decent animation, but not much humour, so for me it's rather an average fairy tale. Children will definitely enjoy it 100%. 65%.
